NOAA has announced that from January 1, 2026, many items such as tuna, swordfish, grouper, mackerel, mullet, crab, squidโฆ will be banned from the U.S. market if harvested from 12 Vietnamese fisheries that do not meet MMPA (Marine Mammal Protection Act) standards. These fisheries are flagged as high-risk for bycatch and lack monitoring & proof of marine mammal protection equivalent to U.S. requirements.
๐ฅ Products most affected
– Tuna (skipjack / bigeye / yellowfin)
– Swordfish / billfish
– Grouper, mackerel, mullet
– Crab, squid & cuttlefish
โ Not all tuna will be banned, restrictions are fishery-based depending on gear, fishing area, and HS/HTS code.
๐ Shipments from MMPA-compliant fisheries can still enter the U.S. with a valid COA (Certificate of Admissibility).
